Replacing the front valve cover gasket is an important maintenance task that should not be neglected. If you notice oil leaking from the front valve cover or if you smell burning oil, it may be a sign that the gasket needs to be replaced. Ignoring the issue can result in low oil levels, engine overheating, and even engine failure.

Despite its simple appearance, the U-shaped silicone gasket's impact on efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness cannot be understated. It is a silent workhorse, quietly ensuring that machinery runs smoothly, pipelines remain leak-free, and electrical systems operate safely.

    ERIKS type R (type A according to the DIN standard) is identical in shape to type M, but has a rubber outer case with metal reinforcement on the inside. The rubber creates a good seal in the housing, even if the housing has suffered minor damage or is not in its best condition for other reasons. The RST version has a dust lip. These types are often chosen to replace a type with a metal outer case because they are easier to install and can cope with minor damage to the groove, such as scratches.

    4.  SHAFT SPEED: As different shafts move at different speeds you need to consider the runout, the housing bore, and oil type being sealed. Ensure you select a seal that will not suffer from abrasions or spiralling.

    Next, remove the valve cover screws or bolts, taking care not to strip them in the process. Some recommend applying a bit of penetrating oil to these fasteners before removal to ease the process. With the screws removed, gently pry off the valve cover, being cautious not to damage the gasket residue on either the cover or the head.
